Wider is definitely better. Once you get the fire line disced it will be easy to maintain it. I would also look at clearing out all the downed debris on either side too. Keep the flammable growth a good distance from buildings. If you have a pond, pool or cistern, get a gas powered pump that can supply a fire hose, something in the neighborhood of 125gpm @ 100psi would be good. Also check with your local fire dept. or dept. of forestry to get advise.
