They may have just been playing. They're carrion eaters and will not harm humans or pets. They do have a powerful sense of smell that can detect, among other things, mercapton, a gas produced at the very beginning of decay of a corpse. Their stomach acids are so strong that they kill any bacteria or disease organisms in the road kill they eat so they are beneficial in that way. If they roost or nest in a place where you don't want them, get a device from Contech that shoots a stream of water wherever you direct it whenever motion is detected. They call it "scarecrow".
