Unless the alternator is a special, they are almost alllllllll Negative ground. If its a coil ignition instead of a mag, it (coils primary polarity) should be matched to the ground configuration and if you use an ammeter its polarity sensitive n needs wired correct or else it would read bass ackwards. As Bob noted the starter will still turn the same direction regardless of battery polarity.
