Virgil, depending on your house and climate you might find that an add-on heat pump water heater is the best bet.

Ours is about 3x more efficient than the electric tank heater and gives off a byproduct of cool dry air. Dehumidifies the house nicely while cooling it a little- for free. Paid for itself in just over 1 season. We use ours when the house temp is naturally over 70º, right about now until October.

Next cheapest would be solar.
