I bought a Farmall 504 Diesel a year ago. The desciption of the electrical problems you are having sounds exactly like mine. I found the electrical diagram for a 560 diesel on this site and used it as a guide. The main difference is 6 glow plugs instead of 4. Do a search in the archives for a 560 wiring diagram and look for the diagram for converting to an alternator. Mine also had a screwed up alternator conversion but once I got the wires traced out it was easy to fix. The main problem I am having this year with it is that the 40 plus year old hydraulic hoses a going out.
