All I can tell you is DON'T do it. Lots of old horses or young either have and are being left on people's places. With hay prices getting and no killer market it will only get worse. I know don't sound very neighborly, but I have had this happen to me 3 or 4 times. A couple of neighbors just wanted a place for them to graze part time. One moved and the horses were here for 5 years. A couple more offered to pay me 25 dollars a month and buy there hay from me. Guess what? I got 25 dollars a piece and the horses. I traded them for a couple of shotguns. Just know your neighbor good, and be prepared to adopt some horses
