In some locations, Subsidance happens (the earth surface lowers to take up the space) In others water (both fresh, and brine) can fill the space remaining. TOday research is being conducted toward pressurizing the zone by pumping CO2 down the hole. This reduces the emissions of CO2 drastically, but also takes energy and causes more to be used to compress/pump. Also the oilwell sites are not in the same location as the coal based plants making the CO2. Interesting, but it may be just a stop gap method for sequestering CO2, while we switch to other energy distribution and production methods that do not use fossil fuels. JimN
