With many years of experience growing grass for hay, I have found what works best for me. N-P-K applied before/at green-up in early spring. More pounds per acre of N than P and K. Additional N after first cutting in early May. Second cutting in late June (dependent upon rainfall received). If good second cutting additional small amount of N is applied. Make third cutting ( again dependent on rainfall received ) late August. Another application of N ( and possibly some P and K)for the good growth of grasses usually seen in the cooler weather of September and October. Make last cutting during the fine sunny days of mid/late October and even early November. If your regrowth from first cutting grass is weak looking or yellow/green it needs Nitrogen. N makes grass GREEN. !!!
