I doubt very much that you fried the coil as it will run full time all the time if wired to 6 volt's check to see if they put in a Balance resister when they converted it to 12 volt. To check the the coil hold the coil wire near a ground then break the points open with a screw driver you should get a spark if none the the coil is bad. Be sure its got voltage going in and out of of the two small screws on the top of the coil. Walt
