Have a Sears, 18 hp v twinKohler, Didn't run it in several years. Started it up, it had low hrs on it, and put the tranny Hydrostatic in gear, and it did not go anywhere. Let it run for a while, continued trying to get it to go, and said oh no, the tranny must be spent. Let it run some more, and then put it in forward, and it took off. Ran it around the property for a while, and it is fine. I think that sitting it had to really warm up to get the fluid going. A tranny for this unit is $625, plus installation. Not worth it if it failed. Id sell it for parts. Good Luck.
