As for your light switch, are you trying to line up a decal or trying to turn the switch off?
To make sure the lights are off, the switch should be turned completely counter-clockise. The switch might have been removed and put back on with the pointer poking off in any old direction.
As far as decal placement, mine has Dim at the top and Off over at about ten o'clock, but I think it got repainted at some point. The only picture I could find in the operator's manual (same picture used twice to illustrate different things) show the decal oriented more to the left side, with Off below 9 o'clock, maybe not as low as eight.
