Rex Hit the nail on the head. 99% of pleated air filters get changed way before the end of the use cycle.
A pleated filter works by trapping larger particles that you can see with the nekid eye thus slows down the fine particles (ones that you can't see) so they can be trapped in the pleats. The overall efficency is thus measured over both types of particle sizes.
On a diesel engine then you would not change a filter until fuel usage rises or power decreases OR a manometer measures the filters restiction amount and reprts a filter change is needed.
Changing a pleated filter before this time is just wasting money. My 4cyl gasser that's about 35k miles and my diesel is still running strong at 27k miles. The gasser dropped 5mpg when it needed changed. fuel mileage returned to normal after the change or 35mpg.
Looking at a pleated air filter is the worst way of making a good decision.
Yes there is a huge difference between OEM and Fram pleated filters. OEM will have a higer efficentcy rating and that is a true reading of pleated filter preformance.
