If you free the engine with all that rust in it and not clean it out you it will grind all that rust into the cylinders, piston and rings. If it gets into the oil it can damage the crankshaft and bearings. I would remove the head and pan to clean the rust out when you get the pistons out. I would take it apart and rebuild it. You would then have an engine that will last a long time and be trouble free. In the long run it is the cheapest way to go. Bill
