If I don't know the history, I always remove the head unless it comes unstuck very easily. Open exhaust valve will probably be rusted if water has got in for any length of time. Could be a cylinder, or more,full of mud dobbers. Rings will likely be stuck too. Why was it left? Possibly needs repair on bottom end. I have had all these and others too.
Always worth the time to check it out first rather than have much more trouble later.
