I don't think you can equate them with the Volkswgen Beetles - or the French 2CVs. They don't meet the minimum US motor-vehicle requirements - and if they did - they'd cost a lot more money. In the US, we can't even get road-worthy diesel passenger cars and small trucks made in Europe - new or used. At least in Canada, many are legal if bought used from Europe.
The 50 MPG thing is kind of silly to - yeah putting around not doing much work - but not when worked hard or driven fast. I assume you're talking about the little Daihatsus (or howeever you spell it) that Toyota owns?
We used to have some good little utilitarian trucks available here - but no more because demand dropped. I still have my 85 Isuzu 4WD mini-pickup with the 2.2. diesel. It's probably the most all-around truck I've owned in my life. Gets into tight spots my big trucks won't and gets around 30 MPG no matter what I do, or how I drive it.
