There's switch high up on the driver's side of the xfer case that's fed "ignition on" power through the 4X4 fuse.
When you shift the xfer case into 4X4, this switch feeds power to the thermal actuator in the front axle, which then heats up internally, and pushes the axle disconnect togeter.
The little switch next to the actuator turns on at that time, and lights the 4X4 lamp in the cab.
If the actuator has been changed to the newer-style "motor type", there's a little added harness that goes between the original connector and the newer motor, with a wire leadinf back to the power side of the switch on the transfer case.
It's easy to tell which actuator you have... original-style has only one wire going into the actuator. Newer style has a multiple-pinned plug.
