Sean: Beach's books sound very much like what my friend referred to, except it seems he was referring to "a" book, rather than two, but, after a number of years I may not be remembering correctly. For anyone interested, the whole of Beach's two books are online, free, at chla.library.cornell.edu (search S A Beach) but the illus are b/w; however, most are in color at hortweb.cas.psu.edu/aps/aony/aony1.html. There's also a relatively new book out: The New Book Of Apples: Joan Morgan etal, 2000+ world varieties, $45 up so far.
