the timing marks are on the flywhell, there is an opening in the bell housing, it may have a cover over it. anyway, turn the engine by hand, and using a light watch for some kind of a mark to come into view. the mark might be a zero or TDC or something else, I don't remember. it would be wise to go around a couple of times to make sure you got the right mark. then, with the mark lined up with the pointer in the hole, install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 plug wire position on the dist. cap., assuming the cap and wires are still together in their original positions. if, all the above, there is a 50/50 chance you got it right, engine should start. if it won't start, then remove cap, withdraw the distributor enoughto turn shaft 180 degrees, reinstall, try starting again. no harm will come from putting the distributor in wrong, harm will come to you if while hand turning engine you fail to have the ignition off, it might start or kick back, so pull the coil wire to be safe. if this doesn't work out email I'll try to be more specific, luck
