Control would be the issue, like the others said. The ship"s Captain does not pilot it through the locks- a Canal Company Captain does. The trip is about 40 miles. There are three sets of concrete locks, not over 110 feet wide, so many ships are too wide to go through. Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side, Mira Flores and (I think) Pedro Miguel near the Pacific side. Dredging is year-round, especially in the Gailliard Cut about midway through.
