I don't know about the learning Spanish thing though. When I was in first grade almost 50 years ago,we learned to count and sing some songs in Spanish right here in mid Michigan. At the time we were the biggest pickle producing county in the US and had a huge number of migrant workers here every summer. Their kids always started school with us. They'd stay til October then most would leave. Seems like there was always one more family every year that would stay and get full time factory work or something. A lot of mixed marriages resulted. I DON'T think they were illegals though. They always had Texas plates on their trucks and the kids talked about San Antonio and such places as that. I don't know what ever happened to the kind of program or system that brought people like THAT out to do migrant farm work. Maybe that's what we need to be finding out. I DO know this all started with a program that brought LEGAL,DOCUMENTED workers here during WWII. That's what gets me. Why can't we do that anymore?
