Here is the fully technical definitions... or at least mostly accepted definitions...
Transmission driven PTO - only works with the clutch out, if the tractor is in gear, when you stop moving the PTO stops turning. If you are running the PTO with transmission in nuetral, you will have to push the clutch and wait for the PTO to stop to get it into gear.
Live PTO - usually has a 2-stage clutch, pushing the clutch halfway stops the tractor from moving, but the PTO keeps running. In order to put into gear or shift gears you have to push the clutch all the way down, stopping the PTO. These can also have a hand clutch that will stop the tractor from moving and leave the PTO running, but you can't shift gears without stopping the PTO.
Independent PTO - just like the name implies, the PTO is completely independent of the clutch and gears, you can stop, shift gears, etc. and the PTO will keep running.
As far as IH is concerned, there was LIVE PTO on some imported models and the Super MTA and newer all had Independent PTO as an option.
I believe Allis Chalmers had models with live PTO.
