The reason they put lead in the gas was to raise the octane rating in the cheapest possible way. The cheapest way to raise the octane rating of gasoline is to add tetra-eythel lead to it. Even so, that does cost money. If they have to take the lead out of gasoline what are they going to do to keep the octane up where it won't destroy your engine? That's where the extra cost comes in. We always had no lead high octane gas available for those who wanted to pay the price. Amoco white gas was one of those. I used to put that in my Olds 98 with it's 10.25 compression ratio.
