No sore toes here. I had said I would'nt heat near any component area that the preheat would possibly cause damage to. I use heat sometimes and sometimes I don't, each area is different.
You are perfectly right about strength.
I understand the pretty intense heat, but on an engine block it is better to weld at a lower setting, with a smaller rod to minimize this heat.
There is usually no structure strength required for repairing a cracked block, and the cooler settings will seal the block and also the strength of the weld will be fine. I have never had a problem sealing a cracked block without preheat. Sealing of the crack is what I thought we were discussing.
However when I weld a hub back together on an old disc turning plow I will pre and post heat. This sometimes causes a problem reseating the bearing races or grease seals.
The machine shops in my area will weld them, but they won't warranty the weld. I have never had 1 to rebreak so I think I have a pretty good system.
