Yes Firefox is based on the same core that Netscape is--at least, it was a couple years ago when I last was keeping track.
Anything but IE will help keep you from getting lots of nasty stuff on your computer. But remember to use Ad-Aware regularly and keep a virus checker.
Yeah I never did like hearing about that super-huge mega-merger where Sun, Netscape, and AOL merged. I was already thinking the writing was on the wall for Sun, and bundling IE with windows really hurt Netscape.
You should still be able to find all the netscape you want on oldversion.com - one of my favorites. I used to really like v1.22, it seemed the snappiest on dialup.
