Firefox is a product of the Mozilla Foundation, a tax-exempt organization that was originally funded by AOL but is now independent of them.
I highly recommend Firefox. By default it blocks most pop-ups. And one of its best features is that you can change how it works by downloading what they call "add-ons". There are two add-ons and one configuration change I always recommend for Firefox:
Adblock - almost all banner adds are removed from web pages. Really cleans things up. After you install it you should subscribe to one of the sites that track banner ads so your browser will recognize and block them (I use EasyList); these subscriptions are free.
FlashBlock - replaces Flash animations with a small icon. If you want to see the animation you can click on the icon, otherwise all that jumping, flashing, blinking junk is never shown
Image.animation_mode - on the address line type about:config to see the various settings. Find this one and change it from Normal to None. This stops a lot of the animated graphics that are part of the web pages you visit (as opposed to the advertising that are really different sites linked in).
