Kentucky and Tennessee, if added together, are second only to Texas in cow numbers. That doesnt even consider the number of horses, sheep, llamas, and everything else eating hay. Both had extreme drought this year following a freeze that reduced first cutting by more than half. With high fuel prices its next to impossible to bring hay in as supplies are tight within 500 miles.
Going rate is 50-120 per round bale. Doesnt matter what the round bale is, its how desperate the guy wanting it is. I had a wagon load I bought down by the road asking 65 a roll for some weedy late cut 4x5's. One guy stopped and said that was mighty high and he'd call back. Before he pulled out the next guy pulled in and paid cash on the spot. Been that way all winter. Squares 6-10, when you can get them. Been a guy coming into the Kroger parking lot with a semi load out of Illinois, getting 6.00 cash on the spot and he never sits more than 3 hrs.
