I can`t agree with you on the dyed fuel theory either, there would have to be a photo sensor or something similar in the tank to sense the red fuel if what a local fuels supplier told me is true, ULSD and red dyed fuel are the same fuel with the exception of the dye. The fuel suppliers aren`t building new tank farms to house ULSD supplies.
I don`t run the dyed fuel in my truck because I won`t risk the fine but I know many who do with no problems.
BTW, my 04.5 Ram 3500 with the Cummins 600 and 48RE auto is finally getting respectable fuel mileage for a diesel. It took over 60k on the odometer and for my stainless muffler to rust off on both ends???? but I`m finally averaging right about 21mpg in typical stop and go country road driving if I don`t let the tach get above 1800 rpm. That`ll get me down the road at ~65mph.
