It's not really uncommon to hear of that with OTR engines. I know of a couple Cat 3406B's that did close to 2 million miles with nothing more than a bit of head work. Rotating assembly was never touched in them, but one I know of finally had rod problems... It's nothing to put 2-3 mil on some of those things if they get a couple of in-frame's.
A pickup is another story. This one seems to have spent a lot of time onthe highway that no doubt helped it immensley. There's nothing worse for any engine that stop and go driving and not getting warm. I'd almost bet that this particular one was a 350 gasser too... I don't know of too many of those diesels that didn't snap their cranks off let alone go that distance.
