It aint just because of the calcium. I have rims here that were never near calcium and they rusted out around the valve stem hole. I also have rims 25-30 yrs old that have always run calcium and don't have a speck of rust on them.
I think the #1 problem with rims rusting out is old age and operator neglect, at least that's what I've found here at Burrhead Labs in my research. Some of these wheels they're talking about are 40-50 yrs old, and have'nt been cleaned or painted since they left the factory.
If before the rims get rusty these folks would break the tire down and clean and paint the wheel with rust over or any other preventitive primer, there would'nt be a problem. I should have the bugs worked out on these PVC wheels shortly, that should solve the rust problem. I hope to use recycled oil jugs from yuppie owners in my test program.
