I bought a john deere 250 series 2 new in 2004 with cab heat and air and metal tracks. From new to this day when the outside temperature gets to around 80 degrees and above the temp gauge will ride the edge of the red when working. I dig with my backhoe and use the 250 to backfill, the dirt and or stone are loose so it's not working it that much and it still rides the red. I've talked to other guys here and there that have them and they said they have the same problem. I've often stopped to let it cool back down several times when working it. the windshield wiper stopped working after being used a few times, a hydraulic hose under the seat and engine wore through after only about 500 hours. I guess it was routed wrong from the factory. It seems to me that it is a fuel hog. It has some trouble raising a heavy load when it is all the way at the bottom, but after it gets about 2 feet high it's good. (thats just with a pretty heavy load). (it's the geometry of the beast). Other then those things it's a good machine, runs good, has 61 hp and pushs very good, it feels very stable, is comfy. I got the bigger tires and the metal tracks, it does very well with them, but the tracks cost around $2,500 and new tires are around $600 for 4 of them, I'm thinking I should have gotten a rubber track machine (no flats) and thats all I have to say about that.
