I was just watching a German movie that took place here looks like just after WWII. Whatever the tractor was (could have been Lanz Bulldog or Hanomag) had to be cranked by hand. The steering wheel (with a section of the column) was slipped out and slipped into a hole on the side of the tractor and spun to start it. Then put back where it belonged to steer.
