Boys need someone in their lives to lay down and explain the boundaries in life (ie: a father). Someone who won't give an inch in a confrontation. Someone who is hardheaded enough to believe that some things are just simply WRONG and you don't do them, or else. Most especially, boys need this when they are YOUNG.
I hate to admit this, but I have caught each one of my boys doing things to animals that they thought were "fun". Let's just say that justice was swift and sure. A ton of bricks falling on you makes the first offence the last offence.
Anyway, this is tough for me to put into words. Ever since my wife and I got married, I knew that one of the principle jobs of my life would be being a father to my children. I have never seen it any other way. In the last almost 15 years my wife and I have had someone "babysit" exactly twice, and both times were for emergencies. We don't have fancy toys. To my regret, we don't really have anything saved for retirement (what is that anyway?) other than our land, etc. But it is worth it knowing that my kids will not be a hazard, nor a liability to society. What they actually do in life is their business, but it is my (and my wife's) business to point them in the right direction.
I know it isn't "touchy-feely" to say this, but kids need discipline, and from an early age.
