Hubby is out of town, so I'll pass his story along. About 15 yrs ago our neighbor, Wendell, came over to ask for help in getting his tractor out. He had already enlisted the help of another neighbor who had a small, modern JD tractor (don't know the model). James started up our 48 JD A and headed over to his place. Wendell was lucky to be alive. There is a gravel pit along the back side of his place and several washes that were 30 ft. deep. He had gotten too close and the tractor was actually over the edge, but somehow the bush hog wedged and kept the tractor from going completely over the edge. The smaller JD couldn't pull it out. They hooked a cable from the stuck tractor to a very large tree to keep it from going over. Then they hooked the small JD to the stuck tractor, then chained our 48A to the smaller JD. Why they did it that way, I don't know. I guess they figured if the tractor shifted the wrong way, the other two, plus the cable to the tree would keep it from going over. When they started pulling with the small JD, nothing. Then James eased the clutch in on our 48A and everything moved. They were able to get the tractor back on top and on solid ground. We had the bush hog on and there wasn't much room to turn around. Wendell's little boy asked James how he was going to get that "big tractor" turned around and out of there. James just smiled, hit the right wheel brake, pivoted the tractor around with the bush hog swinging neatly underneath the bottom strand of the fence. Little Wesley's eyes nearly popped out of his head. He'd never seen a tractor turn like that. He was very lucky his daddy had not been injured of killed that day.
