Propane, how and why?

I don't have any experience working with propane engines and I was curiuos exatly how does it work? What does the water from the engine do? What is the electric solenoid purpose? What controls the amount of gas to the manifold? Is there a good propane reference book available on line? Any help would be appreciated. Chappy
