The only trouble you may have with the smog issue is if you are going to register your vehicle in California. I think the inspection stations are more interested in safety. I don't travel much in the state of calif, but I have seen only one inspection station,between San Diego, and Los Angeles and it says no pickups. At the border they check for any fruit comming in to the state. Local police, or Highway Patrol may pull you over if they see something wrong with your load. The Higwway patrol has a roving pickup in my area that is set up for vehicle inspections, but again I believe safety is their main concearn. I herd somewhere in the state they were going to install a sniffer on the side of the road so when you passed it the unit it will check a sample of your exhaust and if you failed the test the owner would get a ticket in the mail.
