I'm trying to get my mower running after sitting over the winter. I've got it charged and it cranks ok but its not getting fuel. I replaced the fuses and checked the seat switch. The fuel pump on the 285 fuel injected model is mounted below the tank at the rear and is electric. When I turn the key on the pump does not run but the contact measures 3 volts or so. I jumpered 12 volts directly to the pump and it runs so I suspect I have a short somewhere in the wiring to the pump. I was told that you should be able to hear the pump running when you turn the key but do not engage the starter (I can't remember if it was that way last year when it was running or not)
Does anyone have any suggestions or does the pump get varying voltages depending upon how much fuel the regulator needs? I'm guessing as it has a bypass gas line back to the tank that the pump maintains pressure as long as the key is on but I may not be correct in that. Any ideas?

After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
