Kimberly, I'm truly sorry for your loss. Though I can't answer for the tractor in question, I have a Massey Ferguson 2135, made in the 60's. It, like most tractors, has what are called "square cut" gears in the transmission. It is why tractors do not shift on the run and must be stopped to change gears. This detraction is made up for by the much stronger nature of the gears and their ability to do heavier work without wearing out. I've noticed that it is easy to bump the shifter and have the tractor jump into gear when the tractor is running slow idle. I'm not saying that anyone "bumped" this tractor into gear but if it wasn't fully out of gear, vibration could possibly set the gears back into action and put the tractor back into motion. Tractors are an inherently dangerous piece of equipment and for that reason, I either shut down the engine prior to getting off or I set BOTH gear selector AND range selector to neutral AND set the brakes. Again, I'm very sorry for this accident. It was probably one of those freak things that happen around farm machinery. You can't be too careful and accidents are unforgiving.
