a "Comet" with an 8 horse Briggs? You overfilled the oil- it's pushing it out the breather tube (which goes to the carb, and puts it back into the cylinder where is burns and creates the smoke). If that ain't it, run the beejeeses outta it-it will stop smoking or stop running.
I just got two of these lil' dudes at an online auction, and the kids are having a blast racing around the yard while mowing. They smoked like freight trains when first fired up- but run pretty clean after a dozen hot laps.
