when you refine a barrel of oil, it doesn't all convert to gasoline because it is a mixture of all sorts of different hydrocarbon compounds. You get a certain amount of gasoline, so much diesel, some asphalt, some petroleum coke, etc, depending on the composition of that particular oil. Only about half of the oil, at best, is converted to gasoline, the rest is lower value products. Gasoline is the highest valued component, and the refineries are set up to try to get the most gasoline out of a barrel of oil. There has been a lot of technological advances since the 60's, particular in the area of catalytic crackers, that allow refineries to get more gasoline out of a barrel of oil. So there's less diesel left over, and that's one reason why diesl prices are now higher than gasoline.
