A won't start

Hi, I have a 1946 John Deere A I can not get it to start. The carb. was bad so I rebuilt that. The mag was bad so I had that rebuilt. I don't have an "A" manual. I have a "G" manual. I timed it the same way it said on the "G".They both have wico model "c". I took the spark plug out on the flywheel side and waited until compresion. I kept turning it about a half a turn until left hand impulse. Then I put a wire into the top hole of the mag and turned it counter clokewise until it sparked on the mag. I put the mag on the tractor turned it towards the front as far as possible. Then I turned the flywheel one full turn back to l.h impulse. Then tapped the mag back until it clicked. Then I tightend it back up. All it does is backfire and exhaust comes out the carb. I have no stuck valves b/c I already checked that. Is it possable that the flywhell was removed before I owned it and put on wrong? I just bought it about a month ago and it still has not run. Also there is alot of gas coming out the pepcock on the fly wheel side. There is not nearly that much ever coming out of my"G"'s. any help would be helpfull thanx!
