If it's a negative ground system, you don't need to. Most 6 volt starters can run on 12 volts just fine. They will spin much faster but as long as you don't stand on the starter button, they can take the extra voltage just fine. I've even heard of some that will continue to turn the right direction even when you reverse the polarization. Don't know how or even IF that's true, but I heard it once. You can always give it a try. What kind of tractor is it on?
