Keep using the 706 diesel... a diesel engine is very efficient under a light load. Shift up to 2nd in high range and throttle back. Your 706 will provide a much smoother ride as well.
We plan on raking with our 1086 this year instead of the 544, a diesel just above idle vs. a gas at full throttle will be cheaper to run, even with diesel fuel costing more than gas. Plus the cab and AC will be welcome!
