A 55 chevy I worked on blew up a new battery.I put an ammeter in the circuit and found it was charging 60 amps at idle.It had a 6 volt generator on it.Early 12v generators were marked 12v on the id tag.If you want to see your battery swell and spray acid you can try the dumb stunt.Too many people repeat wrong info the see on forums.
