When the coil failed in the mag of an old machine I have I did this; used the existing points/ condenser and the mag's secondary disributor section but subsituted an automotive coil and used an external battery for power. In effect. made a distributor out of the magneto. there is usualy a copper bus from the mag's coil to the center of the distributor area, I just removed it and ran a coil wire in through one of the vents in the mag body. It didn't require doing anything irreversable to the mag but has allowed me to use the machine for the last two years without paying a fortune for a new mag.
