The problem: When you first take off in the morning, reverse doesn't work. Also, it winds way high in 1st gear, basically skips 2nd and drops right into 3rd. Torque converter lockup and overdrive are ok.
It only does this through the first shift cycle. Once you get it to run through all the gears, you can stop, back up, take off normally, everything will work fine.
I have only recently put this vehicle on the road. I know it sat for 1 1/2 - 2 years. I have changed the transmission filter. The fluid smelled strange; not burnt, but did have an odd odor. The pan was pretty clean; no excessive debris. I have a can of TransX cleaner/conditioner in it now.
I downloaded a manual for this transmission, but it doesn't really address this specific problem. What should I do to make it right? Seems like a pressure problem to me, but I don't have a gauge to test it. Debris in the shift valve? Bad control solenoid? If so, why does it work normally after driving a short distance?
