The information found in these publications come from an average of actual sale prices at auctions, compiled from data submitted by "spotters" who sell it or actually work for the publisher. The major problem is these can be regional. The CIH 895 you mention might have actually brought around one price at a few sales in the mid-west, but would not bring anything near it in other regions. When the data is submitted by "spotters" it is then compiled and printed. Problem is with some of them is they are only printed annually, and the next issue might have data from last year or even before. There can be major changes in the economy even from the time of actual printing. As you might know Ag machines are not making much money right now, so the actual value when spotted last Sept, might not be worth beans in Feb, and who knows about next month. The only truly reliable price guide is to go to actual sales in your area and watch what others are giving to buy, and then actually sell the stuff yourself. I'd love to sell from anybodys Blue Book, but don't count on it. Lenders will only give a percentage of current "published" value, or manufacturers retail minus depreciation, if it's new enough. As a wholesaler or retailer, you have to appraise a machines value on what you think [key word think] it will bring and how long you can live with it. Only you can determine that from actual bill of sales reciepts and gut feeling form years in the business. The books are only a dummies guide showing what something has sold before at auction.
