RAID controllers when configured with a hot spare will automatically utilize the hot spare drive in the event that another drive in the array fails. This is the whole point of RAID technology. The sticky part is that unless configured to notify someone, the controller may accomplish this task without anyone's knowledge until the 2nd drive craps out and there is no more spare to take care of the issue and the whole thing crashes.....ooops.....
