You're probably right about the Allison. Our F350 has the ZF--the one he's after, but we've had more than our share of problems. The master/slave cylinder is a pathetic excuse for for quality and durability. We just went through a clutch kit replacement after only 150K miles and on the 4th master/slave cylinder assembly.
For Jim, whatever auto transmission fits without mods would be his best choice.
