Summer job with the state Highway Department in 1969, doing R & D on computer applications for highway construction, landscaping, etc. The permanent guys were older and basically afraid of computers, so I was pretty much "self directed", and did a lot of cool computer stuff back in the "early days". Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to accept the job offer I got from GE at the end of the summer- that was before Bill Gates made dropping out of college fashionable, and I felt I just had to get my degree before getting a job. Poor decision, in retrospect.

While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents.
