I'm guessing that was about the time all the forage harvester mfgrs. were starting to build two row forage harvesters and the engineers calculated that tractors approaching 100hp would have enough torque to shear drive shafts under heavy load and would risk snapping the pto shafts off and reduced the size of the choppers drive line thus saving money for them the mfgr. also reduced the gearbox size. This is also why most tractor mfgrs increased the size of the 1000rpm pto shaft in there tractors approaching 200hp. If you bought a new IH and wanted a split pto for tractors over 100hp they were not covered under their warranty even though I don't recall seeing any broken myself even up through a 1586 but we never did much 540 work with it except maybe a Woods batwing.
